THE LAST LECTURE

On June 24, 2022, a tribute was paid to Professor Professor José Leitão, Co-PI of the REMIRucula project, for his retirement. On the day he turned 70 years old, Professor J. Leitão was invited to present the “Last Lecture” to a wide audience.

The Rector of UAlg began by summarizing Professor J. Leitão’s CV, thanking the large collaboration provided at the University, contributing to increase visibility of the educational establishment.

The Director of the Foundation for Science and Technology at UAlg also gave the highest praise to the work developed by Professor J. Leitão, particularly in the field of Genetics and Plant Breeding.

In his speech, Professor Leitão mentioned the long-term collaboration he established with INIAV, in particular through the Assistant Researcher Paula Coelho, responsible for the REMIRucula project. He highlighted some of the results obtained under the REMIRucula project.

In the end, it was agreed to hold the REMIRucula project seminar, in September 2022, at Universidade do Algarve.

EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS’ NIGHT 2021

On the 24th September 2021, the INIAV team (Oeiras) from FCT-REMIRucula project "Resistance characterization to downy mildew in wild rocket crop" (ref. PTDC/ASP-PLA/28963/2017) participated in the European Researchers’ Night 2021 (NEI 2021) at the Marina de Oeiras (Oeiras), from 4pm to 10pm, organized by the ITQB/NOVA and Oeiras Municipality (CMO).

This event, which has been held since 2005, is funded by the European Commission and aims to promote and celebrate Science in order to bring the Scientific Community closer to Society.

The activity presented is under the topic "The rocket cultivation in Portugal and the challenge of controlling the downy mildew infection" aiming to familiarize the consumer and the general public with the wild rocket cultivation, including its growing habits, and alert the population, especially the producers, to the downy mildew disease, a growing problem in Portugal due to the climate change.

Rocket is a baby leaf vegetable of the Brassica family, with a growing economic impact worldwide and strong expansion in Portugal. It is part of the Mediterranean diet and is eaten fresh. It is very appreciated for its organoleptic characteristics, containing a high content of glucosinolates that are beneficial to health. However, the wild rocket production is compromised by downy mildew infection which is caused by the oomycete Hyaloperonospora sp..

Under the REMIRucula project, the resistance of wild rocket genotypes to the downy mildew disease is evaluated, and the DNA of the plant and oomycete pathogen have been characterized.

2019-11-18

On November 18, 2019, in Oeiras, at 16.00h, the INIAV researchers under the FCT-REMIRucula project, Paula Coelho, Paula Scotti and Corina Carranca met the responsible for the breeding area of the Italian company ISI Sementi s.p.a. (https://www.isisementi.com) Massimiliano Beretta and two collaborators. The company headquartered in Parma (Italy) commercializes vegetable seeds and has provided rocket seed samples to be studied under the project.

The meeting consisted of the exchange of knowledge on rocket crop with great tradition in Italy, highlighting the problem of downy mildew disease. A visit was made to the trials taking place at the Complex of Greenhouses of INIAV and in controlled environment chambers. This meeting was an opportunity to discuss some results obtained in the first year of the project. Future collaborations were addressed with an invitation to the INIAV group to visit the Italian company and it was discussed the possibility to receive a member of who should also receive an ISI Sementi s.p.a. company to take an internship at INIAV in the area of downy mildew resistance.

In this morning the group from ISI Sementi s.p.a. had been meeting at the University of Algarve with Professor José Leitão to learn about the work being done in the area of molecular markers.

On the 27 September 2019, the FCT-REMIRucula project team "Resistance characterization to downy mildew in wild rocket crop" (ref. PTDC/ASP-PLA/28963/2017) from INIAV (Oeiras) participated in The European Researchers' Night (NEI 2019) which took place at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC-UL), Príncipe Real, Lisbon, from 6 to 12 p.m. This event has been held since 2005 and funded by the European Commission. It aims to disseminate science in order to bring the scientific community closer to society.

Rocket is a leafy vegetable of the Brassicaceae family and is part of the Mediterranean diet. In recent years it has gained great economic relevance at national and international level. The present activity focused on the topic "The importance of rocket in the Mediterranean diet" aimed to make the rocket vegetable familiar to the general public, including its growth habits and alerting them for the downy mildew disease which is one of the main constraints for its high yield. Disclosure leaflets and various stickers with the project logo were distributed to the children.
