“Cowpea is the most versatile African crop: it feeds people, their livestock and the next crop.”
In the CoHeSus project we study cowpea, a legume with economic and biological importance.
We are analysing the genetic variability of Portuguese landraces, foreign varieties and wild species. After identifying the ones rich in bioactive compounds, we will select those that cumulatively have the highest resistance to water stress. The chosen populations should be introduced into cowpea breeding programs. We thus align CoHeSus' objectives with the international effort to equalize agricultural productivity with the needs of the growing population in the current climate change context.
